Properties: Green to yellow crystals from acetic acid, mp 280°. Sublimes at 120°. Absorption spectrum in H2SO4: Meyer, Fischer, Ber. 46, 85 (1913). Sol in concd H2SO4, in aq KOH soln (reddish color); insol in aq Na2CO3, NH3, Ba(OH)2. Moderately sol in alcohol, slightly in water.
Melting point: mp 280°
Use: Important intermediate in the manuf of alizarin and indanthrene dyestuffs. Forms insol Ba and Ca lakes; has been proposed as analytical reagent for the detection of Ca.
