Literature References: Occurs in nature as the minerals: magnetkies, pyrrhotine, troillite. Usually prepd from the elements: Lux in Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry vol 2, G. Brauer, Ed. (Academic Press, New York, 2nd ed., 1965) p 1502. The commercial product is ~75-80% FeS.
Properties: Colorless hexagonal crystals when pure; usually gray to brownish-black lumps, rods or granular powder. mp 1194°; d 4.84. Trimorphic with transition points at 135° and 325°. Oxidized by moist air to S and Fe3O4. Practically insol in water. Soluble in acids with the evolution of H2S.

Use: As a laboratory source of H2S; in the ceramic industry; as a paint pigment; in anodes; in lubricant coatings.
