Properties: White, odorless, deliquesc crystals or granules. Gradually absorbs up to about 5% (? mol) moisture on exposure to air. Slowly becomes brown in the air due to liberation of iodine. Its aq soln is similarly affected. d 3.67. mp 651°. One gram dissolves in 0.5 ml water, ~2 ml alc, 1 ml glycerol; sol in acetone. It is made slightly alkaline to render it more stable. pH: 8-9.5. Keep well closed and protected from light. At ordinary room temp crystallizes from water with 2H2O in the form of colorless, prismatic crystals. Incompat. As of potassium iodide. MLD i.v. in rats: 1.3 g/kg, Loeser, Konwiser, J. Lab. Clin. Med. 15, 35 (1929).
