Properties: White, somewhat hygroscopic granules. Very sol in water, slightly in alcohol. 100 g will dissolve rapidly and completely in 67 g of cold water. Converted into pyrophosphate by ignition. The aq soln is slightly alkaline to phenolphthalein. Keep well closed.
Use: Buffering agent in antifreeze solns; nutrient in the culturing of antibiotics; ingredient of instant fertilizers; as sequestrant in the prepn of non-dairy powdered coffee creams.
Therap-Cat: Cathartic.
