Title: Luteinizing Hormone
CAS Registry Number: 9002-67-9
Synonyms: LH; ICSH; interstitial cell stimulating hormone
Literature References: Gonadotropic hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary under the regulation of LH-RH, q.v. Together with follicle-stimulating hormone, q.v., is critical to the growth and maturity of ovarian follicles. Stimulates androgen production by ovarian theca cells that is converted to estrogen by granulosa cells. Induces ovalution and the development of the corpus luteum. In males, stimulates production of testosterone by Leydig cells of the testes. Structure is a heterodimer of non-covalently linked a and b subunits; analogous with FSH, TSH and chorionic gonadotropin, q.q.v. Isoln from sheep pituitaries: C. H. Li et al., Endocrinology 27, 803 (1940); eidem, Science 92, 355 (1940); eidem, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 64, 367 (1942). Isoln from pig pituitaries: T. Shedlovsky et al., Science 92, 178 (1940); B. F. Chow et al., Endocrinology 30, 650 (1942). Complete amino acid sequence of ovine LH subunits: H. Papkoff et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 93, 1531 (1971); W.-K. Liu et al., J. Biol. Properties: White powder. Isoelectric point 4.6 (sheep), 7.45 (pig). Soluble in water. Chymotrypsin, trypsin and pepsin destroy the gonadotropic action of LH. Picrolonic, flavianic, picric, and trichloroacetic acids precipitate LH with retention of its physiological activity.
