It decomposes when exposed to light, slightly hygroscopic. It is soluble in chloroform, very slightly soluble in methanol or ethanol, practically insoluble in water and also soluble in dilute alkali solution. 7-Ethylcamptothecin is slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol or chloroform. It is soluble in N,N-dimethylformamide or the mixture of chloroform. It can not form slat with acids. Forms sodium salt with sodium hydroxide solution.
